Changing Activation Key

I need to change the Activation Key for a copy of SQL Server 2000 that I already have installed and up and running. I have the new key but can't figure out how to change from the old, no longer valid, key.

How can I change keys w/o dumping the DB, uninstalling, and reinstalling all of my instances?

Hi,

why do you want to change it? Normally it should be just fine if you have the license at hand if someone asks for it.

Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Original key was from a Microsoft Partner Program which is no longer active. MS said we need to stop using that activation key. We have a new one.

Changes to Master/Target Server Configurations

I've installed SQL Server 2000 and applied SP3a. I see SP4 is available and fixes a lot of things. The only bit I am unsure about is section '5.3.2 Changes to Master/Target Server Configurations'

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/b/d/1bdf5b78-584e-4de0-b36f-c44e06b0d2a3/ReadmeSql2k32sp4.htm#_5464_sql_server_agent_enhancements_705

"Before you apply SP4, you must complete several steps to upgrade your SQL Server 2000 master/target server configuration. The changes that are introduced with SP4 are not compatible with SQL Server 7.0 target servers, or with any servers not running SP3 or later. This is a change from the original SQL Server 2000 functionality. "

As I'm just starting out I don't even know what 'Master/Target Server' is. I'm only installing to my PC which is XP Pro SP2. Can I ignore this step and apply the patch or do I need to do as it states?

Thanks

SQL Server 2000 service pack 3 and 3a are twenty five .sql files Windows uses as needed, I have used them for all existing operating systems with minor problems with Windows 2000 standard server. I would say just run it and in SQL Server 2000 and below ignore most questions only answer those relevant to your situation and you will not run into problems with SQL Server. Hope this helps.

Changed user p/w, can't start Sql Server

Hi;
I am running Sql Server dev edition on my home system - not on a domain.
When I installed I selecgted mixed security so can have user/pw ad well as
SSPI. I told it to run the server using my login.
I changed the password for my Windows login and Sql Server will now not
start. If I change back to the old pw it will. How do I get it to update the
pw for my username for when it starts?

After changing the Service startup account password, you need to change that
in Control panel -- admin tools -- services.
How to do:-
1. Control Panel - Admin tools -- Services
2. Double click above the MSSQL Server service
3. In the Log on tab, change the password, Click ok and restart the
service.
Note:
Do the same for SQL Agent service.

Change version of SQL 2000 on running system

Hi,

is it possible to change the installed version on a server from SQL 2000 Standard Edition to SQL 2000 Developer Edition?

The server has been a production server and is now only used for testing by development, not from end users.

Best regards, Stefoon

I think the only supported way to do this is to uninstall and reinstall SQL 2000.

Thanks,
Sam Lester (MSFT)

|||Yes as you're downgrading the edition, but you can use the database without any issues with a backup.|||

Satya, what's the trick to change a current edition on a machine other than uninstall/reinstall?

change sqlvdi.dll IdentifySQLServer

I've inherited a SQL 2005 Server with SP2 installed that throws this error whenever it's backed up via EMC Insignia's Retrospect 7.5:

Source: SQLVDI

SQLVDI: Loc=IdentifySQLServer. Desc=MSSQL$DATALIBRARY1. ErrorCode=(1060)The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Thanks,

If the SQL instance is named DATALIBRARY, then you'll need to look at the Retrospect configuration to see why it's using the wrong name. It may be as simple as revising the Retrospect backup job. After uninstalling / re-installing the Retrospect client countless times, I was finally able to get it to sync with the SQL instance DATALIBRARY. Now I'm getting the same error message with the correct server name:

SQLVDI: Loc=IdentifySQLServer. Desc=MSSQL$DATALIBRARY. ErrorCode=(1060)The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
. Process=2540. Thread=2760. Client. Instance=DATALIBRARY. VD=.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Any other ideas / troubleshooting I can try?

Thanks,

- Al|||Thanks Kevin.

I uninstalled / re-installed the Retrospect client and was able to get the client to sync up with the correct SQL instance name. Now the error message is the same, except that it points to the correct name:

SQLVDI: Loc=IdentifySQLServer. Desc=MSSQL$DATALIBRARY. ErrorCode=(1060)The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
. Process=2540. Thread=2760. Client. Instance=DATALIBRARY. VD=.

Any other troubleshooting you can think of?

Thanks,

I uninstalled / re-installed the Retrospect client and was able to pick up the correct SQL instance name. Now we're logging the same error with the right server name:

Change Server name in SQL2005 Cluster

Once the SQL2005 cluster is installed can I change the "physical" server name of the 2 server nodes in the cluster. I do not want to change the virtual server name but the "physical" Windows server name....

Steve Dunn

sdunn@.esiindy.com

BOL refers:

When an instance of SQL Server is part of a SQL Server failover cluster, the process of renaming the computer differs from the process of renaming a computer that hosts a stand-alone instance. For information about renaming a computer that hosts a failover cluster instance of SQL Server 2005, see How to: Rename a SQL Server 2005 Virtual Server.

SQL Server does not support renaming computers that are involved in replication, except in the case of using log shipping with replication. The secondary computer in log shipping can be renamed if the primary computer is permanently lost. For more information, see Replication and Log Shipping.

When renaming a computer that is configured to use database mirroring, you must turn off database mirroring before the renaming operation, and then re-establish database mirroring with the new computer name. Metadata for database mirroring will not be updated automatically to reflect the new computer name.

After the computer renaming operation, users who connect to SQL Server through a Windows group that uses a hard-coded reference to the computer name will not be able to connect to SQL Server if the Windows group specifies the old computer name. To ensure that such Windows groups have SQL Server connectivity following the renaming operation, update the Windows group to specify the new computer name.

Change server name in MSSQL cluster

Hi all, I've got PDC and BDC Windows NT 4.0 Servers (Enterprise edition) installed in the MS cluster. The clustered application is MS SQL server 7.0. Now I need to change names of both nodes - PDC and BDC Windows NT 4.0 Servers. Has anyone any experience with such operation ? Is it too risky ? Thanks a lot for any hint MichalChanging the server names will break your SQL servers.

I did this on a standalone (changed the server name) and SQL stopped working. The fix according to Microsoft was to reinstall SQL on the servers. When the installation starts it will see that all the components are already installed and then see the name resolution conflict and fix it.

This worked for the standalone but I dont' know about the cluster.|||Furthermore, you can not change the name of a PDC without reinstalling NT 4 server.

Change ReportServer database

We have installed Reporting Services on a new server using the local
database. Now we want to point to a ReportServer database on another
database server.
How can we change the server used for the ReportServer database to point to
a different server?
Thanks
--
RickIn SQL 2005:
Open - Start/All Programs/Microsoft SQL Server 2005/Configuration
Tools/Reporting Services Configuration
This will open the Reporting Services Configuration Manager. Choose
"Database Setup" from the left column and set the server and database name.
In SQL 2000 run the following (see
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/mpearson/recoveryplanningforsqlreportingservices.asp for more info):
rsconfig -c -s<ServerName> -dReportServer -a<Authtype> -u<username>
-p<password>
<ServerName> is the new Server name <Authtype> is â'Windowsâ' or â'SQLâ'
authentication of the service account SQLRS will use to connect to the
ReportServer database <UserName> & <Password> is the name/password of the
service account mentioned above.
Eg : rsconfig -c â'sSQL01 -dReportServer -aWindows â'uSDM\svcSQLRS â'ppass@.word
rsconfig can be found in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\Tools\Binn folder.
This assumes that the report services db is a restore of the original. If
it's different then it get's a little more complicated as encryption keys and
versions need to match.

change pwd disconnects remote server

Hello,
I have sql personal server installed on my xp machine and have registered a
remote server called pccm-nt. I have login permissions to the server and I'm
a database user for all of the databases.
I connect to the remote sql server with my windows domain account username a
nd password. When I change my pwd I can no longer connect to the remote serv
er, pccm-nt, I usually have to remove the server and re-register it. Would s
omeone be able to tell me w
hy changing my domain password is causing this conflict?
Thanks,
ChiekoYour security token is now invalid. Logout of the domain and log back in ag
ain.|||Okay,
I'll try that but I think that I did log off and log on again.
Thanks for the help,
Chieko

Change Object Ownership

I'm running SQL2K on an Win 2K Server. Because of addition of additions to our network, we've installed AD on the Win 2K to graduate
it to a Domain Controller Server. Checking the event log, one finds
an ownership warning:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: SQLSERVERAGENT
Event Category: Job Engine
Event ID: 208
Date: 1/15/2002
Time: 8:00:01 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXX-XXX
Description:
SQL Server Scheduled Job 'DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'DB Maintenance Plan1'' (0x72097D93A71E1842AA6C46E6AC59750B) - Status: Failed - Invoked on: 2002-01-15 20:00:01 - Message: The job failed. The owner () of job DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'DB Maintenance Plan1' does not have server access.

I believe this warning is generated because the SQLServer system is
looking to execute the DB Backup plan using the new Domain
administrative account. I came to this conclusion after reviewing
replication ownership warnings in the event log. I was easly able to
change replication jobs from then new Domain administrative account
to sa.

I would like to change the ownership to sa for a Maintenance Plan.
Is there a way to do this? Is this the solution? You would be better off not using a maintenance plan but coding the requirement yourself in a stored procedure. It is very easy to do and gets round these problems as you know what it is doing.
