Changing authentication mode in TSQL?

Is there a TSQL statement that will allow you to change
the authentication mode from 'Windows Authentication'
to 'Mixed Mode'?
Thanks in advance!You can use the undocumented xp_regwrite/xp_instance_regwrite to change the
registry key that contols this (which is what EM does anyway) or use SQLDMO
but it needs a SQL Service restart to take effect e.g.
exec master..xp_instance_regwrite N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE',
N'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer',
'LoginMode', N'REG_DWORD', 2
'Set security mode to mixed where oSQL is a SQLServer object
Set oSEC = oSQL.IntegratedSecurity
oSEC.SecurityMode = 2

Changing Authentication Mode

How can I change the authentication mode for sqlexpress without going through the UI? I looked at the docs for sp_configure, dmo and smo but I may have missed it. I'd like to be able to run a script that changes the authentication mode of an installed sqlexpress instance from windows only to moxed mode.

ThanksYOU can either use the SMO classes for this (tell me if you need an additional smaple for this) or change the appropiate value in the registry. See my Screencast for that on my site in the Screencast section.

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

This should work in SMO. You will need to restart the server after doing this.

Server s = new Server(); // default instance
s.Settings.LoginMode = ServerLoginMode.Integrated;
s.Settings.Alter();

How can I change the authentication mode of SQl Server from 'windows

windows authentication but I want to change it to 'mixed mode'.

The easiest way is through Enterprise Manager. Right click on your server
and choose Properties.
On the Security Tab, in the section called Authentication, select "SQL
Server and Windows".

Change username

I'm using the Forms Authentication with Reporting Services, and I have a
situation where i need to change a username for a user. The user already has
lots permissions to different reports, etc... When I change the username in
my UserAccounts DB and the ReportServer DB it logs in fine, but shows no
objects.
When I view the reports via an admin account, it shows the security still
lists the old username, before I changed it.
Any ideas on how to successfully change a username in reporting services?
Thanks,

Change SQL Server Authentication Programmatically

Hi,

Does anyone here know whether it is possible to change the
authentication method of a SQL server instance programmatically, rather
than going through enterprise manager.

I am using SQL-DMO (under C#) for some other things, but the
documentation is so bad that I can't find out whether what I want to do
can be done. I have also tried googling but came up empty handed.

I hope that someone can help me.

Cheers

At a guess try SetSecurityMode under the SQLServer/IntegratedSecurity Object

Thank you so much. I couldn't believe that it wasn't possible, but I

JonoThe only thing I know about, though I am not quite familar with SQL-DMO is
to change the regkey:, using the XP xp_regwrite
For registry changing try this regkey:
Default instance:
" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\M_icrosoft\M
SSqlserver\MSSqlServ_er\LoginMode"
to 2 for mixed-mode or 1 for integrated.

This is a VB solution (with SQLDMO). You'll have to translate this to C#
yourself.
On Error GoTo ErrSec
Dim srv As SQLDMO.SQLServer2
Set srv = New SQLDMO.SQLServer2
' integrated security login
srv.LoginSecure = True
' or standard security login
srv.LoginSecure = False
srv.Login = "sa"
srv.Password = "MyPassword"
srv.Connect "MyServer"
' switch to integrated
srv.IntegratedSecurity.SecurityMode = SQLDMOSecurity_Integrated
' or switch to mixed mode
srv.IntegratedSecurity.SecurityMode = SQLDMOSecurity_Mixed
' restart server: shutdown looses the connection and generates an error.
' we catch that error in the error section and restart the server.
srv.Shutdown
Exit Function
ErrSec:
srv.Disconnect
srv.Start (True) ' true reconnects automatically|||See SQLServer->ServerLoginMode()

Change of namespace in forms authentication

I have implemented the forms based authentication by Teo Lachev and it works
fine. But whne I change the namespace to something else and make all the
necessay modifications in the config files , I just can get it to work. The
reportsmanager comes up with unable to communicate to the server!! Has
anyone attempted to do this Change the adventureworks.extensibility to
something else like myworks.extensibility'
Please let me know what do I have to do to get it working? Any help would
be most appreciated!!!There are a zillion dependencies when you change a namespace. We've done it
successfully, but I can't think of any way to debug it other than to do a
raw text search for the old name spaces in all your code files.
Make sure you stop and restart all of your services after the config
changes -- even reboot if you need to. There may be some changes that don't
get through. Also, are you updating all of your binaries?
Hope that helps,

I got it working, my problem was in the logon.aspx page as it could not load
the dll and I just overlooked ... silly me :-)

change mdf to sql authentication

I have a web app, designed using VWD Express and using SQL 2005 Express. It has a mdf database called "client". It was created using security of windows authentication. I have already changed my instance of sql server express to accept mixed windows and sql authentication.

How do I change my "client" database's permissions to the sql authentication? I need to add a user name and password as a requirement for my web host to be able to attach the mdf to their instance of sql 2005. It has to be the same user and password as I use with my web host's sql server 2005.

Thank you in advance.

Hi mlg74,

Not very sure what you mean. Do you mena that, since you are going to upload your database to web hoster, you want to create a sql user name and password for your database?

If my understanding is correct, based on my understanding,you have no need to do that. Database authentication is managed by database administration tools, not your database file itself(the mdf file).So, you can just upload your mdf file to the web host and ask for a sql user name & password.

BTW, since you were using windows authentication before, you need to modify your connection string after authentication mode changed to "sql authentication". You can do that by simply remove "Intergrated Security=True" and add "User ID=username;Password=psw".

Sample: <add name="constr_name" connectionString="Data Source=Server IP;Initial Catalog="DatabaseName";User ID=User Name;Password=PSW"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

If you also want to use sql authentication mode on your local machine, make sure you have sql management studio express downloaded https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796&displaylang=en. You can create a new sql authentication name/password through Security-->logins-->New logins in Management Studio Express.

Hope my suggestion helps

I know you are right, but my webhoster obviously doesn't know what they are doing. They told me I had to have the same usr name and password on my local machine as I do on the sqlserver 2005 on their server. But I am using windows authentication on my local express edition, but they said I had to make the passwords match anyway. The first time I uploaded the database files to the server for them to attach, I could no longer access my database on their server. So that's when I changed my authentication to mixed mode and had them re-attach it. But your saying it makes no difference, becasue those values are not stored in the .mdf, or .ldf files at all.

What I did to finally make it work, was after they attached it, again I could not access it on their server. So out of frustration, I deleted it off their server and was going to start over. But when I created a new db on the server, I used the same password and username, and when it created, it was my attached db files, so I was happy! That was weird, and it's odd, how some webhosters dont know how to handle sql server 2005.
